Extension 4: Putao

Myanmar >> Extension 4: Putao

4 days / 3 nights

The unique and historic Putao is considered the most important town in Northern Myanmar. Putao is located within the Kachin state and built at the foot of the world’s highest mountain range, the Himalayas. Access by road is virtually impossible, so it is necessary to arrive by plane from Mandalay with a 15 minutes technical scale in Myitkina every Tuesday and Friday. The biggest interest in the area lies in its natural landscapes and mountains and above all, the possibilities as a destination for adventure, based on the new Malikha Lodge. Likewise there is a great variety of ethnic minorities, mostly Lisu and Yawar, who have lived there for hundreds of years, when the area was called, “Hkamti Long”, which in the local language means, “Great Place of Gold. The area also has rich varieties of plants, especially orchids, a highlight being the unique Black Orchid.

First day
Mandalay/Putao
After breakfast there is a transfer to the airport for the flight to Putao followed by transfer to the Malikha Lodge Hotel. During our fist day in Putao we will have the opportunity of learning the culture and traditions of the area. A tour of the local tribes can be made by foot with our guide, to meet local hunters and “mahouts”, known in Myanmar as Oozies who specialise in riding elephants.

Second day
Putao
After breakfast there is a full-day excursion around the area, which combines a wonderful cruise along the river with a visit to the town of Machanbaw. From there, we will continue downstream reaching an area of river-beaches, where it is very common to observe local tribes looking for gold. After a picnic lunch under a gorge on a river-beach, we will disembark and return to the hotel by road whilst enjoying the sunset.

Third day
After breakfast there is a half-day journey by elephant. The journey departs from the lodge across the crystalline waters of the river Nam Lang, rising towards the incredible rice plantations. These plantations are built as terraces on the slope of nearby mountains and located in front of the lodge, where we will return at lunchtime. After lunch there is some time for relaxing.

Fourth day
Putao
Breakfast is followed by transfer to the airport for the flight to Mandalay.
