Extension 1: Golden Rock

2 days / 1 night

Golden Rock is regarded as one of the most sacred places across the country as a place of Buddhist pilgrimage. On the other hand, showing a great challenge to the law of gravity, Golden Rock can be found in the mountains which guard the Gulf of Martaban, about 250 kilometres east of Yangon, exactly at the summit of Mount Kyaiktiyo, about 1,100 metres above sea level. Its religious greatness, coupled with breathtaking views of the area, make this extension an interesting adventure along the local legend.

First day
Yangon/Kyaiktiyo
After breakfast transfer is by car to Kyaiktiyo, about 5 hours from Yangon. Mount Kyaiktiyo, is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site, which shelters the famous and powerful “Golden Rock”. To climb the mountain we may travel the last kilometres by truck and for the rest of the journey by foot for about an hour, or there is an option of hiring some carriers who lead us to the top. After check-in at Mountain Top Hotel we will visit the Golden Rock.

Second day
After breakfast and if weather permits, we will enjoy some incredible views from the top of the mountain. On our way back to Yangon we will visit Bago, a town located about an hour and 15 minutes from Yangon, which in ancient times was considered the most important town of the Lower Burma, due to its fluvial port, inexistant since the change of the course of the river centuries ago. The archaeological remains of the village are precious and important, as well as the historic significance of the village throughout the country. During our tour we will visit the most important sites in the area including Shwemawdaw Pagoda, from where we can view the entire village, and the statue of the Reclined Buddha Shwetalyaung, about 55 metres long. Return to Yangon during the afternoon.
